Your employment rights
Many
nannies do not realise that they are employed in exactly the same way
as people in "normal" jobs, and are therefore entitled to
benefit from just about all the same employment rights as other employees.
PAYE for Nannies has been providing specialist nanny payroll services
for many years and is happy to advise all nannies on any aspects of
their employment rights.
We do not take sides in any dispute and will not act on behalf of either
the employer or the nanny, but PAYE for Nannies will endeavour to provide
independent, helpful advice on all employment matters.
In particular, you should realise that you have the same rights as
all other employees in respect of:
- A contract of employment
- The right to receive proper payslips showing gross pay, and deductions
for Income tax and National Insurance contributions
- The right to receive an annual statement of pay and tax deducted
(P60) by 31st May each year.
- Protection from unfair dismissal
- Redundancy pay if made redundant after at least two years' service
- Paid holidays
- Maternity Pay
- Sick Pay
- National Minimum Wage (not live-in nannies)
In particular, you should note that proper payslips and your last P60
certificate are required by all building societies when applying for
a mortgage and, unless National Insurance contributions have been paid,
you will not be entitled to Statutory Sick Pay if you become ill and
you will not get Statutory Maternity Pay if you become pregnant. This
could result in a loss of thousands of pounds in income if these circumstances
arise.
